Within the world of coffee and all of its celebrities and pundits, Coffezen just happens to be the most informative and interesting one of them all! He provides his followers with specialized knowledge about not only coffee itself but caffeine, how it affects the human mind and body (my research topic), when to drink coffee to maximize its affects on the mind, and much more! This source of information will be great with my essay in order to find interesting articles about coffee/caffeine and its affects and maybe even ask Coffeezen a question or two! In fact just from following Coffeezen for a day I've already learned about a chemical called cortisol. Cortisol is the chemical released in our brain that makes us alert and awake, which is what the substance caffeine promotes or triggers the brain to produce. Cortisol output peaks around 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM, 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. With this said, it is best to consume your coffee in-between these periods of peak cortisol output in order to prevent the typical caffeine crash people across the globe know all too well. I have also learned about how coffee and caffeine can throw you off your sleep cycle. The chemical melatonin is released by the body in order to tell itself its time to fall asleep, but its protagonist chemical cortisol (the chemical that makes you feel alert and awake) is still in your system from the coffee you drank counteracting your body's natural melatonin output. Melatonin output is triggered by environmental signals, such as the dimming of lights to an eventual darkness (mimicking the sun), eating dinner with your family, and thinking about the day you just had. All these environmental factors have been widely known by many people (understatement) to make you feel tired even though you didn't do anything yet.
